Pennsylvania Research Resources
The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine,
Volumes 1-39

(CD 213)

Reviewed by Marthe Arends

Researchers to the Pennsylvania area are no doubt familiar with the prestigious Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania; their publication, The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, is distributed semiannually and contains a variety of articles, research tips, book reviews, and case studies. This CD contains the images of the actual publication for the years 1895 to 1995 and features specific information on approximately 343,000 individuals. According to the Introduction, the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania "was among the first in the United States to recognize the value of collecting and preserving the vital and personal records of those ancestors whose lives now comprise our American History. The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania is committed to preserving and publishing heretofore unpublished primary sources." There are certainly a good many vital records and primary sources published in the Magazine — for example, a volume picked at random (XII) included the following sources:
  • The Memory of Pennsylvania
  • Marriages by Reverend Thomas J. Kitts, Canton, New Jersey and Philadelphia
  • Abstracts of Wills and Administrations of Sussex County, Delaware
  • Early Minutes of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting of Friends
  • Pennsylvania Gravestone Inscriptions, St. Thomas' Episcopal Churchyard, Whitemarsh
  • Marriages by Reverend John J. Johnston of Huntingdon, Blair County, Pennsylvania
  • Abstracts of Wills and Administrations of Bedford County
  • Blunston's Licenses
  • Notices from The Franklin Repository, Chambersburg, 1802-1805
  • Bible Records: Reiff, Brady, Good, Hinman
  • Genealogical Notes and Land Titles
  • Marriages from the Docket of Isaac Hicks
  • Fragments of Old Philadelphia Graveyards, Laurel Hill First Reformed Protestant Dutch Church
  • Phillips Bible Record
  • Obits of Revolutionary War Veterans
  • Bible Records
  • Notes, Queries and Corrections ...and more!

Although the vital records are useful and interesting, I found the other articles just as fascinating, and the family histories and genealogies particularly detailed and informative. Four supplements to the Magazine are included: Palatine Church Visitations, 1609; the Nieuwkirk, Nieukirk, Newkirk Family; Genealogical Accessions, 1974; Genealogical Accessions, 1975.

As with other Genealogy.com CDs, you may search the CD for the name of an individual, or browse through the index. The drawback to this type of CD is that there is no index to search for items that are not names. However, tables of contents and indexes to each section (volumes) are included, making it easier for the interested researcher to find information on a specific church, location, or subject.

If you are researching ancestors in the Pennsylvania area, The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine might be of great help. Full of family histories and genealogies, vital records and primary sources of information, the Magazine makes fascinating reading of interest to any PA researcher.
